I think of him and instantly my eyes fill up with tears. Different memories rise to the surface depending on what I am connecting to at the moment but every time I am filled with love and gratitude for having him be a part of my family. He has forever engraved his soul in our hearts.
Lucky Boy was my golden retriever that we "rescued" through a good friend of mine. I was working as a veterinary technician at the time and my "dream" dog growing up was a Golden Retriever. I went on a quest to adopt one from one of the rescue organizations that takes them in after people give them up. I did grow up with dogs- three of them actually - but they were not Goldens - they were chihuahuas... no comparison! They were cute and yappy and really loved my mom so when I got married of course they stayed with her.
Here is how my story of love with my Lucky Boy started.
I filled out application after application to rescue a golden, did not even care about the age but since I lived in the city in an apartment, my application was overlooked. I got tired of waiting and finally after months and months I told my husband to drive me to North Shore Animal League. So we did!
We met this really sweet mixed breed pup named Duke and decided to bring him home. On the way back, my friend Iris calls me (she knew about my deep desire to adopt a Golden . .well I frankly told everyone I could really ! ) and she tells me of a friend of her husbands who happens to live not far from her in the Bronx is separating from his wife and neither spouse can handle the responsibility of a 7 month Golden pup. SO without hesitation I was Yes! Of Course!!
I hang up the phone and Ralph looks at me like " We already have a dog - What are we going to do? "
Since I worked at a vet technician and we often fostered cats and dogs I knew this was meant to be and I would be able to find him a home with the help of my co workers and vet doctors.
So we changed the routes and headed over to the Bronx. We picked up Iris and she directed us to the friends home and as soon as we pulled up... my heart skipped a beat. I was nervous!! My dream dog was just about to see me for the first time.
We meant the owner who expressed how sad this was but that he just wanted a good home for Lucky. He responded to his name and frankly I felt Lucky so Lucky it was going to be .. forever.
He released him from his kennel in the back yard and this pup ran past everyone ( we were standing around kinda in a circle ) and sat right in front of me!!!
He chose me. He saw me. he knew he was exactly what I needed.
I started to cry and just lowered down to hug him and kiss him. He was beautiful and we both knew that we were meant to be a family. We took him home and the next day I took Duke to work. I explained what happened to the doctors and one of the doctors wife was a rescue advocate who was contacted my a family in Connecticut who were looking to rescue a puppy. They picked up Duke the next day fostered him and adopted him - match made in heaven!
Sometimes the plans we have is not what is meant for us.. and so trusting and going with what feels good is the indicator that you are on track. I did not understand it then .... that that was what happened but boy was I excited for our new adventures to come.
This is the first of many Lucky stories as Lucky taught us all many lessons. He was a healer and a loyal family member and loved unconditionally.
Lucky passed away in August 2015 but boy will you enjoy the stories as I share them with you where you will feel his essence and his soul. I will make sure of that! I honor him and hold a special place in my heart for him. We all do. Stay tuned for more stories about this special soul. I know you will grow to love him too!!
From my grateful heart to yours,
